I have to admit I did not know there was a difference between vegan makeup brands and cruelty-free makeup brands. I wanted to take the time out to put a list together of different vegan makeup brands that are also cruelty-free.
First what is the difference between Cruelty-Free and vegan make up:
Cruelty-free products are those that are not tested on animals during any stage of production, from ingredient sourcing to the final product. This includes testing by the brand itself and any third-party testing.
The primary focus of cruelty-free products is on the testing aspect, ensuring that no animals are subjected to harm or suffering in the development and testing of the product.
Vegan products, on the other hand, are free from any animal-derived ingredients. This includes substances like beeswax, lanolin, carmine (a red pigment often derived from insects), and other animal by-products.
The focus of vegan products is on the ingredients used in the formulation. A product can be vegan even if it has been tested on animals, as long as it doesn’t contain any animal-derived components.
In essence, a cruelty-free product may still contain animal-derived ingredients, while a vegan product is free from such ingredients but may or may not be cruelty-free if animal testing was involved in its development.
It’s worth noting that some products are both cruelty-free and vegan, providing a comprehensive ethical and compassionate choice for consumers who wish to avoid both animal testing and the use of animal-derived ingredients. When looking for such products, certifications from organizations like Leaping Bunny for cruelty-free status and the Vegan Society for vegan status can offer assurance to consume.
