Designing a Pet-Friendly Brutalist Interior: Tips and Toy Recommendations

Finally, the Brutalist architecture trend from the 1950s and 60s is making a comeback in interior design. This style is characterized by the use of raw, industrial materials like concrete, exposed brick, and metal. It’s a bold and daring look that is not for everyone, but if you’re looking to make a statement and create an edgy and unconventional space, Brutalism might be the way to go.

Brutalist architecture and design may be renowned for its raw, industrial aesthetic, but it surprisingly happens to be a perfect match for your furry friends. With minimal furniture elements and open spaces, Brutalist interiors provide ample room for pets to play, roam, and enjoy their surroundings.

One element that’s become a staple in these interiors is polished concrete floors. But while these floors may be beautiful and durable – especially if you have a pet prone to accidents – they’re not always the most comfortable surface for your four-legged family members. That’s why we recommend elevating your pet’s bed for a little extra luxury and comfort.

You can keep the lines of your kitchen sharp and clean by selecting a square metal feeding dish for pets. We recommend a three-compartment dish for your cat as wet and dry food should always be separated.

The last thing to consider is how your pet’s toys will blend into this interior, as brightly colored toys left on the floor will draw more attention in an open space. A shallow cement planter can always double as open toy storage if your pet isn’t ready to give up their colorful toys but if they are check out our recomendations for toys that will blend seamlessly.

For cats, our top recommendations are:

  1. Floor-to-ceiling climbing trees in black or dark grey, placed in a corner to give the illusion of an exposed pipe.
  2. Americat Balls, these amazing American-Made cardboard balls will mirror the layered structural elements of Brutalist Architecture.
  3. Felt cat doughnut in grey or black that will double as a hiding space in a more open interior.

For Dogs, our top recommendations are:

  1. Black Kong, return to the basics with this rubber toy that will blend well with your interior.
  2. Awoo Grey Felted Bones, make for a great game of fetch and won’t stick out. Augie and Bone do not recommend this toy for aggressive chewers.
  3. Benebone Dental Durable Dog Chew Toy is our pick for more aggressive chewers and when flipped upside down it gave us Geisel Library vibes
