Get ready for an awesome adventure! Flying with your furry friend can be a thrilling experience or a disastrous one. But don’t fret, we’re here to guide you through the ins and outs of flying with your dog in the cabin.

Research – Understand any restrictions

Airlines have restrictions on the size and breed of pets they permit, so be sure to check if your pet is allowed before booking your flight. Some airlines also have a limited number of pets in the cabin, so be sure to secure a spot for your pooch by including your pet in the initial booking.

If you’re traveling to another country, you will also want to check with the airline to ensure there are no restrictions. It is also important to understand any quarantine requirements if you are traveling out of the country with your pet.

Before you Book – Choosing the right carrier is key!

Check the airline’s policy for restrictions around the size or type of carrier, as some airlines may not allow boarding if you have an inappropriate one. Most airlines require your pet carrier to be able to fit under your seat during takeoff and landing. Augie and Bone also suggest a carrier that allows your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.

Packing for a Stress-Free Journey

Don’t forget to bring all the essentials to care for your pet while you’re at the airport, including a collapsible water bowl, leash, treats, poo bags, and medication. If your dog is anxious during flights, talk to your vet about natural or prescription options to make the journey more comfortable.

Ensure that you have labeled the carrier with your pet’s name, your name, phone number, and destination information. It is also important to keep in mind that on most airlines a pet carrier counts as one of your personal items.

Ensure you have all the necessary paperwork, such as health certificates, vaccinations, and any other required documents, pack this with your passport or boarding pass.

The Day of your Flight

Arrive at the airport early to avoid any stress, and let the airline know that you’re traveling with a pet.

When arriving at security let the agent know that you are traveling with a pet to ensure you are directed to the correct line. During security, you’ll need to take your pet out of the carrier with the leash and harness off and hold your pet.

Once through security and before boarding your flight allow the pet to go to the bathroom. Many airports and terminals will have a pet relief area, but if yours does not you can lay out a pee pad in the bathroom stall for your pet.

During the flight offer water and treats to your to keep them hydrated and calm.

When you arrive at your destination, check your pet for any signs of stress or discomfort and seek veterinary care if necessary. Give them time to stretch their legs and relieve themselves before setting off on your adventure.
