Finding a Dog Sitter

Awesome! You made the choice to have a dog sitter, now what? Finding someone you trust to watch your dog is a stressful thing especially if you are new to the town and in a time crunch. Below are some ideas that myself and friends have used to find someone.

I personally like having my dog stay with a person so they can sleep with someone and not get too anxious and over-stimulated by a ton of dogs in a kennel or vets, but everyone’s preference is different and one is any better than the other-everything depends on your dog’s temperament.

Ask a friend / familiar face to your dog: First I would definitely only ask a friend who your dog likes and likes your dog. I always go through a list of people in my head who my dog feels comfortable with, who I trust, and who would feel comfortable with me asking. I always make sure they know it is okay to say no knowing it is a huge responsibility, as I would not want someone to watch my pup and bring negative energy into the situation and be miserable, that is not fun for anyone. I make sure the person knows what it would all entail and I do offer compensation or offer to watch their pet if ever needed. If they will not accept the money I always bring them a little surprise back from my trip even though watching my dog has been a gift enough.

Ask neighbors: The best way to find a dog sitter or establishment is to ask people you know and trust. I live in a community where I see other people walking their dogs and will ask them if they would recommend anyone for dog sitting. You never know who is a dog sitter and asking could open up a door.

Ask your vet, groomer, pet store owner: Any of the places you take your dog often are great to ask around if they know of anyone. Sometimes you will find flyers at your local pet store or coffee shop.

Online: You can use sites like rover, wag, next door neighbor or facebook to help you find a sitter. You can also google dog sitters and find an establishment near you with great reviews. I recommend doing a meet and greet to make sure you feel comfortable with the person or establishment and they understand the needs of your pup. Make sure to ask any questions you have to make sure it is the right fit for you. I always make sure to ask for updates throughout the day and photos just to give me peace of mind.

Before they stay with a sitter: Make sure they are up to date on their vaccines, especially bordetella. The most common thing dogs can come home with from staying with a lot of dogs is kennel cough so you want to make sure to take all the precautions you can.

I wish you happy travels and the best of luck finding someone. Let us know how you found your sitter or how these options worked for you.
